At 8-3/8 inches tall (not including the integral mounting extension), the Acu-Rite 00850 Easy Read Magnifying Rain Gauge is larger than many. It measures up to 5 inches of rain and is graduated in tenths of an inch (but not also in centimeters as it says on the package). The scale on the 00850 is blue with silver-gray numbers and hash marks. The numbers 1 through 5 are 1/2 inch tall, and the digits on the 1/2-inch indicators between the whole numbers are about 1/4 inch tall. When water fills the gauge, the numbers are magnified by more that 35%, making the bold whole numbers appear to be almost 7/10 inch tall.

The 00850 rain gauge is constructed of heavy-gauge transparent plastic and therefore, will not shatter like glass, allowing for longer life of the gauge. It is 2-3/4 inches wide and 1-1/2 inches deep at the top and tapers down to about 1-7/8 inch wide and 1-1/8 inches deep at the bottom of the rain receptacle. The front of the receptacle is semicircular (this is why it magnifies when there's water in it), and the back is flat.

To mount the 00850, you can simply insert the integral pointed extension at the bottom of the rain receptacle into the ground. The extension also has two keyhole slots for securing the rain gauge to a fence by means of screws or nails (not included). For accurate readings, be sure to select a location away from buildings, trees, and other obstructions.
