The Twirl-a-Squirrel™ Story:
Pat Marshall,
owner of BirdQuest™ and inventor of the Twirl-a-Squirrel™ Electronic Bird
Feeder Baffle, relates the story of how the idea for Twirl-a-Squirrel™ came to
be:
"I was
sitting in my kitchen one day watching the birds eating when I noticed
that I could not see the birds on the opposite side of the feeder. I tried to
move from one window to another to get a glimpse at the birds but was
frustrated in that I could not figure out what kinds of birds they were! That
is when I thought of the initial version of the 'Twirl-a-Squirrel™' invention!
Except this version would be for rotating birds very slowly.
"So about a
week later I had a crude prototype made that had a wire that went from the top
of the feeder to an on/off switch inside my house. Then when birds landed
I turned the on/off switch on and was pleasantly surprised to see that at
certain RPMs, the birds did not mind at all the rotating bird feeders. In fact
I think they liked it more since now they too could see 360 degrees around
them, which was great for looking out for predators like house cats trying
to sneak up on the feeding birds.
"Well one
day, while I was testing my new invention, a squirrel jumped on the
feeder, which of course scared away all of the birds. This was when I
asked myself, 'If I rotated the hanging feeder fast enough, would the
squirrel want to jump off?' So I took my prototype down, made some minor
modifications to the gearbox and motor and hung it back up again the next day.
This time when a squirrel jumped on, I turned the 'high-speed' switch on and
was so excited to see that my new invention 'Twirl-a-Squirrel™' worked
fantastic! The squirrel did indeed get dizzy after about five seconds of riding
the 'merry-go-round' feeder. As the days went by, it was even more fun
watching the squirrels all try to defeat this invention. Of course they never
did!"

News from BirdQuest™
BirdQuest™
Twirl-a-Squirrel™ wins "Best New Product" at Bird Watch America Show!
At the 2004 Bird
Watch
America more than 45 manufacturers entered
products to compete for "Best New Product of 2004". After the dust
settled and the votes from the more than 1,000 retailers in attendance were
counted, the Twirl-a-Squirrel™ from BirdQuest™, LLC was named "Best New
Product of the Year". On hearing the announcement, Pat Marshall, the
inventor of Twirl-a-Squirrel™ and owner of BirdQuest™, commented, "We
appreciate very much the excitement and enthusiasm…over Twirl-a-Squirrel™. We
felt that backyard bird feeders needed a device that would make 'any' bird
feeder (up to 10 pounds) squirrel proof and retail for less than $50."
Marshall continued, "We were also extremely
pleased about the positive reception and orders for our newly-redesigned Spiral
Feeders which we also introduced at the show."
When asked to
describe his newest product, Mr. Marshall replied, "Twirl-a-Squirrel™ is
just what is needed right now to put the fun and excitement back into backyard
bird watching! Even the most stubborn rodent can't beat this battery-operated
electronic bird feeder baffle. Just picture the surprise of a squirrel that
climbs down or jumps onto your feeder. A tiny computer inside will sense the
rodent and activate a motor which starts rotating the hanging feeder and, ...
'the startled squirrel!' He will try to hang on in vain but only for seconds before
he becomes too dizzy and finally gives up. Twirl-a-Squirrel™ is definitely
hilarious to watch and safe for both the squirrels and the birds. And the best
part of this product is that you can use it over and over again with any of
your bird feeders or suet holders."
The
Twirl-a-Squirrel™ is covered by three issued
U.S. patents (5,686,101, 6,363,891 and
6,655,319) with other patents pending. The Spiral Feeders introduced by BirdQuest™
feature several patented features, including a spiral that attracts more birds
and allows more birds to feed. The feeders also have locking lids and a new,
patent-pending "Easy Clean" and "Flip and Fill™" bottom.
This was an attractive feature praised by those who saw these Spiral Feeders at
the Bird Watch Trade Show.
The goal of BirdQuest™
is to provide unique patented products that help meet the needs of the backyard
nature enthusiast. And you can get all their products right here at Wild Birds
